Lolit Solis won’t apologize to Annabel Rama

MANILA, Philippines - Lolit Solis on Sunday declined to issue an apology to her long-time friend Annabel Rama for allegedly maligning the latter’s daughter Ruffa over the radio.

“Hinding-hindi ko gagawin ang public apology because I don’t think I have done something wrong," Lolit said in a phone interview with Showbiz Central.

“Wala akong sinabi, Walang akong binanggit. Hindi ko pinersonal si Ruffa (Gutierrez). Hindi ko sinira ang pamilya niya. Wala akong sinabi. Siya ang actually naging personal ang tira sa akin dahil kung ano ano ang sinabi niya," she added, referring to Annabel.

Annabel in an interview with another talk show reportedly said she needs an apology from Lolit.

Lolit insisted that she did not mention the name of Ruffa in her interview with Ogie Diaz over the radio. Diaz wrote an article on his interview with the talent manager which saw print in a tabloid.

“Kung babasahin talaga ‘yung lumabas na isinulat ni Ogie Diaz makikita mo doon na wala ang pangalan ni Ruffa. Siguro hindi n’ya naintindihan yung binasa niya o hindi nakita yung punto o me nagparinig sa kanya ng kung anu-ano," she said.

She said Annabel could have misunderstood the gay lingo she used during the radio interview.

Lolit stressed she did not mind the attacks hurled by Annabel against her and would still greet the Gutierrezes in case they bumped into each other.

“Hindi ako napikon (sa mga tira niya sa akin). Kung makikita ko sila at babatiin nila ako, babatiin ko sila. Sa akin wala na (ang isyung ito)," she said. - GMANews.TV

10,000 B.C. hunts up $35.7 million

LOS ANGELES - Movie-goers went hunting for their inner caveman as they sat in the dark for the prehistoric adventure "10,000 B.C.," which led the weekend box office with $35.7 million, according to studio estimates Sunday.

The Warner Bros. visual effects spectacle, which follows a band of people struggling to survive amid woolly mammoths, saber toothed tigers and human marauders, also took in $25.3 million in 20 overseas markets where it began rolling out Wednesday.

Opening in second place was Disney's Martin Lawrence comedy "College Road Trip," which pulled in $14 million. Lawrence stars as an overprotective dad who tags along with his daughter (Raven-Symone) on her girls-only trek to choose a college.

Both movies put in decent numbers despite bad reviews.

"10,000 B.C." came in well behind the openings of past blockbusters from director Roland Emmerich ("Independence Day," "Godzilla"), whose best debut came four years ago with "The Day After Tomorrow" at $68.7 million.

"Those movies opened up in the summer. We're very strong for this time of year," said Dan Fellman, head of distribution for Warner.

Fellman said Emmerich's films tend to do better internationally, including "The Day After Tomorrow," which topped out at $186.7 million domestically and did nearly twice that business overseas.

"10,000 B.C." opened at No. 1 in 19 of its 20 foreign markets, among them Spain, Mexico, Germany and Australia, said Veronica Kwan-Rubinek, head of international distribution for Warner.

Overall business was off compared to the same time frame a year ago, an almost inevitable decline given that the blockbuster "300" opened with $71 million over that weekend in 2007, twice the haul of "10,000 B.C." The top-12 movies took in $91.8 million, down 34 percent from the same weekend last year.

It was the fourth straight weekend that revenues fell, cutting into a surge in movie-going earlier this year. Attendance is up just 0.5 percent so far in 2008 compared to a year ago, according to box office tracker Media By Numbers.

"The advantage we've been enjoying over the last couple of months has really taken a punch in the gut," said Paul Dergarabedian, Media By Numbers president.

The previous weekend's top flick, New Line Cinema's basketball comedy "Semi-Pro" starring Will Ferrell, tumbled to fourth place with $5.8 million. That brought its 10-day total to just $24.7 million, a poor showing for a Ferrell comedy.

Debuting at No. 5 was Lionsgate's heist thriller "The Bank Job," which opened with $5.7 million. Jason Statham stars as a former crook drawn back to a life of crime when he's lured into robbing a Lloyd's of London bank vault.

In narrower release, Focus Features' 1930s comedy "Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day" opened with $2.5 million in 535 theaters for an average of $4,750 a cinema, compared to $10,478 in 3,410 theaters for "10,000 B.C." and $5,174 in 2,706 locations for "College Road Trip."

"Miss Pettigrew" stars Frances McDormand as a destitute British governess who bluffs her way into a gig as social secretary to a flighty American actress (Amy Adams).

Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at US and Canadian theaters, according to Media By Numbers LLC. Final figures will be released Monday.

Kung sa radio interview ni Ogie Diaz noong Martes, March 4, ay matapang ang pananalita ng talent manager na si Lolit Solis, ngayon ay kalmado na siya sa pagsagot sa mga binitawang salita laban sa kanya ni Annabelle Rama. Ito ay kaugnay pa rin ng pang-iisnab diumano ng anak ni Annabelle na si Ruffa Gutierrez sa alaga ni Lolit na si Lani Mercado.

Pagkatapos kasing ipagtanggol ni Lolit si Lani sa akusasyon ni Ruffa na inisnab siya ng misis ni Bong Revilla sa isang birthday party, galit na galit na hinamon ng suntukan ni Annabelle ang talent manager. Hindi kasi nagustuhan ni Annabelle ang sinabi ni Lolit tungkol sa kanyang anak.

"Ako, wala akong ano sa paghahamon niya. Okay sa akin ‘yon. Pero, di ba, mas mabuting ayusin namin ‘to? Kasi baka mamaya mas lalong lumaki itong isyu na ‘to. Mamaya kung anu-ano pang isyu ang mabanggit. Mabanggit pa yung scam, mabanggit pa yung Bruneiyuki, mabanggit pa yung ano..." mahinahong sabi ni Lolit sa telepono.

Binanggit din ni Lolit na tinawagan siya ni Ruffa minsan at sinabing huwag nang palakihin ang isyu.

"Parang anak na natin ‘yan, e. Di ba, si Ruffa grew up under our eyes? Talagang lumaki siya dito na ano... Kaya hindi ako nagagalit sa kanya. Ang sinabi ko lang, ‘Naiinis ako, Ruffa, bakit mo pinatulan ang isyu na ‘yon?" sabi ni Lolit.

Kaninang hapon ay nagsabay sa phone-patch interview sa isang radio program sina Lolit at Annabelle. Sa naturang interview ay hindi na naman napigilan ni Annabelle na pagsalitaan ng masakit si Lolit, pero tinawanan na lang ito ng huli.

"Sa kanya [Annabelle] na din naman nanggaling na thirty years kaming naging magkaibigan. Wala pa si Ruffa, magkaibigan na kami. Siguro naman, hindi niya basta itatapon yung thirty years na ‘yon, di ba? Ako, handa akong makipag-usap sa kanya, pag-usapan namin ‘to," pahayag ni Lolit.

Kaugnay pa rin ng isyung ito, iniulat ng TV Patrol World kanina na kumukonsulta na raw si Ruffa ng abogado para sa posibleng pagsasampa ng kaso laban kay Lolit. Ito ay dahil diumano sa "defamatory statements" ni Lolit tungkol kay Ruffa.

Tuluyan nang lumaki ang isyu tungkol sa diumano'y pang-iisnab ni Lani Mercado kay Ruffa Gutierrez sa birthday party ng GMA-7 executive na si Wilma Galvante noong February 22 sa Imperial Palace Suites. Ito ay dahil sa pagsali sa eksena ng manager ni Lani na si Lolit Solis at ang ina ni Ruffa na si Annabelle Rama.

Pagkatapos ilahad ni Ruffa ang pang-iisnab daw sa kanya ni Lani sa The Buzz noong Linggo, March 2, ay hindi naman napigilan ng manager ni Lolit Solis na ipagtanggol ang kanyang alaga na si Lani, na piniling manahimik para huwag na raw lumaki ang isyu.

Ayon sa kuwento ni Ruffa, nilapitan niya si Lani sa birthday party ni Ms. Wilma para batiin sa pamamagitan ng pagbebeso, pero tinalikuran daw siya ng misis ni Senator Bong Revilla.

Nagkitang muli sina Ruffa at Lani sa burol ng ina ng talent manager ni Aga Muhlach na si Ethel Ramos. Dahil sa insidenteng nangyari sa birthday party ni Ms. Wilma ay hindi na raw binati ni Ruffa si Lani sa muli nilang pagkikita para hindi na siya mapahiya.

Bagama't sinabi ni Ruffa na ikinuwento lang niya ang naturang insidente, wala siyang balak palakihin ang isyu. Nagbiro pa nga siya tungkol dito nang sabihin niya sa The Buzz na "My pretty, perfect pouty lips [were] left hanging on air" habang tumatawa.

Kung si Lani ay piniling manahimik, hindi naman napigilan ng kanyang manager na si Lolit na magsalita laban kay Ruffa.

Sa panayam kay Lolit ng entertainment columnist na si Ogie Diaz sa programa nitong Wow, Ang Showbiz! noong Martes, March 4, ay sinabi ng talent manager na hindi obligasyon ni Lani na batiin ang kahit na sino.

"Ang ipinagtataka ko lang, ba't kailangang maging obligasyon ni Lani ang batiin ang kahit sino? Ang mga na-link sa asawa niya, e, siya ang legal wife? Hindi pa ba sapat na civil lang si Lani at kailangan talaga makipagplastikan yung tao sa mga nali-link sa asawa niya, sa mga sumasabit-sabit na babae kay Bong?" sabi ni Lolit.

RUFFA & BONG'S PAST. Ang tinutukoy ni Lolit ay ang pagkaka-link kina Ruffa at Bong noon. Inamin kasi ni Ruffa sa The Buzz na na-link sila noon ni Bong nang wala pang asawa ang ang panganay nina Eddie Gutierrez at Annabelle Rama.

Kuwento ni Ruffa sa The Buzz: "Siguro, inisip ng mga intrigero na parang na-link sa akin si Bong like 25 years ago. My gosh! Let's all move on naman. May mga anak na ako. Panahon pa ni Mahoma 'yon, di ba? I mean, if it's that, God, it's like 25 years ago! I was only like 15, di ba? I don't see a reason na ‘yon ang maging dahilan."

Sagot naman ni Lolit sa panayam sa kanya ni Ogie, "'Day, sa totoo lang, hindi si Lani ang nagpalaki ng isyung ito, sila. Kung hindi sila kumibo, hindi sila nag-react, deadma, di ba? Nalaman ngayon ng mga tao na may nakaraan pala si Ruffa at si Bong. Dati ba, may nasulat na naging sina Bong at Ruffa? Wala naman, ah? Kaya si Lani, tahimik lang. Hindi siya dapat mag-react, dahil siya ang legal wife!"

Nang tanungin naman ni Ogie si Lolit kung posibleng maging simula naman ito ng pag-aaway nila ng ina ni Ruffa na si Annabelle, ito ang sagot ng StarTalk co-host: "Naku, 'pag nakita ko si Annabelle, sasabihin ko rin sa kanya na ang daming babae ang sumasabit-sabit sa asawa niya [Eddie] no'n, kaya 'pag tumatalak siya, naiintindihan siya ng mga tao, dahil siya ang legal wife!"

ANNABELLE FIRES BACK. Kagabi, March 5, ay nakapanayam naman ng TV Patrol World si Annabelle kaugnay ng mga binitawang salita ni Lolit tungkol kay Ruffa. At gaya ng inaasahan ay galit na galit ito at hinamon pa ng suntukan si Lolit pati na si Ogie Diz dahil sa pagdisrepeto ng mga ito sa kanyang mga anak.

Sinabi ni Annabelle na wala sa lugar ang mga komento nina Lolit at Ogie. Nagpakita lamang daw ito ng kawalan nila ng respeto sa Gutierrez family.

"Hindi ko maintindihan bakit sobra-sobra ang reaksiyon mo [Lolit] sa pagtira sa anak ko. Lolit, nakalimutan mo na ba kung saan ka galing? Dati katulong ka ni Mother Lily [Monteverde], hinaharbatan mo ako ng bag, ng pera, ibinibigay ko sa 'yo dahil mahal kita, nirespeto kita.

"Ngayon di mo ako nirerespeto dahil kinakalaban mo anak ko, pati mga apo ko tinatamaan mo. Ngayon Lolit Solis, kung matapang ka, hinahamon kita. Sabihin mo saan, ano'ng oras, gusto mo mag-upakan tayo ngayon din, okay sa akin!" nanggagalaiting pahayag ni Annabelle kay Mario Dumaual ng TV Patrol World.

Dagdag pa ni Annabelle, itinapon daw ni Lolit ang mahigit tatlumpung taon nilang pagkakaibigan dahil sa kanyang mga komento. Sinabi ng palabang ina ni Ruffa na partikular siyang na-offend sa sinabi ni Lolit na maraming babae ang nagkakandarapa kay Bong dahil sa "nota" nito, na parang pinalalabas na ganun din si Ruffa.

Ani Lolit sa interview ni Ogie sa kanya, "Malaki kasi ang nota niyang si Bong, kaya naeelya-elya ang mga babae sa kanya! Maglaway-laway man sila sa nota ni Bong, si Lani pa rin ang legal wife!"

Isiniwalat din ni Annabelle na bago ang interview ni Lolit sa radio program ni Ogie ay nagkausap na sila ni Lolit. Pinakiusapan daw ni Annabelle si Lolit na huwag nang palakihin ang isyu, pero hindi raw tumupad sa kanilang kasunduan ang manager ni Lani.

Sa wakas ay nagbigay na rin ng kanyang panig si Lani tungkol sa diumano'y pang-iisnab niya kay Ruffa Gutierrez sa birthday party ng GMA-7 executive na si Wilma Galvante noong February 22 at sa burol ng ina ng talent manager na si Ethel Ramos.

Marion Jones Begins Prison Sentence On Friday

Olympic gold medalist Marion Jones began serving a six-month federal prison sentence on Friday.

The former track star surrendered to the Federal Medical Center-Carswell in Fort Worth, Tx., just before noon, according toTraci Billingsley, a spokesperson for the U.S. Bureau of Prisons.

Jones pleaded guilty in October to lying to federal investigators about steroid use and a check-fraud scheme involving her husband.

Newly discovered photos show the singer is similar poses with what appears to be coworkers. Yahoo TV reports that Malubay was a hostess at a local sushi restaurant in her hometown of Miramar, Fla.

Malubay told the Filipino publication Pinoy Business she doesn’t want to be famous but does want to represent the Asian community well in a competition where the whole world is watching.

Ramiele took a break from nursing school to compete on Idol and vows to go back to school if she's not chosen for the top spot on the TV show, Pinoy Business reports.

Malubay is one of the "sweet 16" remaining on the seventh season of American Idol.

Filipino-American Ramiele Malubay survived the last cut to sail through the Top 12 of this year's American Idol.

The four who were eliminated and did not make it in the Top 12 were Luke Menard, Kady Malloy, Asia'h Epperson, and the openly gay Danny Noriega.

The remaining six female contestants and six male contestants will go up against each other starting next week.

Ramiele will be joined in the Top 12 by fellow female contestants Kristy Lee Cook, Syesha Mercado, Amanda Overmyer, Carly Smithson, and Brooke White.

The male contestants who made it the next round are David Archuleta, Chikezie, David Cook, Jason Castro, David Hernandez, and Michael Johns.

For her first performance in the elimination round, Ramiele sang "You Don't Have To Say You Love Me" by Dusty Springfield that drew praises from the three judges—Randy Jackson, Paula Abdul, and Simon Cowell.

Ramiele's next two performances though—"Don't Leave Me This Way" by Thelma Houston and "Against All Odds" by Phil Collins—did not impress the judges too much.

But without a doubt, Ramiele has one of the best vocals in the competition and this is enough for America to put her through the Top 12.

Camille made known her plans to resume her shelved showbiz career. But other than work related matters, the former child star along with husband Anthony Linsangan are determined to finally push through with their church wedding before 2008 ends.

"Inaayos na namin," revealed Camille. " Actually, pag-uwi namin aasikasuhin na namin. We have a date already, we have a venue, ‘yong church inaasikaso pa namin. Pero for sure, by the end of this year mangyayari ‘yong church wedding."

Camille and Anthony tied the knot last January 5, 2008 in Los Angeles, California. It was a simple civil ceremony witnessed by immediate family members. A few weeks after, she gave birth to Nathaniel.

Smithson, 24, has made headlines for having a pre-"Idol" career: The Irish crooner recorded a debut album, 2001's "Ultimate High," for MCA Records. It flopped — after the label spent more than $2 million trying to sell it.

The show's gimmick has always been to pluck talented young hopefuls from obscurity and make them into recording artists.

Besides Smithson, several of this year's semifinalists are not exactly rookies in the world of music. Kristy Lee Cook once had a deal with Arista Nashville, and rocker Robbie Carrico was part of the pop group Boyz N Girlz United.

"If they hadn't already tried to make a name for themselves, then they don't deserve to be in (the) competition," said judge Paula Abdul, defending the contestants' real-world experience.

Haley, who sang "Breaking Up is Hard to Do," was the first one booted. Cowell said Tuesday that the Elida, Ohio, resident looked like he had been locked in his bedroom for a month and needed some fresh air.

"I haven't gone tanning, so I'm being myself," the 17-year-old said before exiting the stage.

Abdul told the telegenic Davis, 25, from Lowell, Ind., that she needed more experience. "You're a beautiful, talented girl," she reassured.

Borgella, a 25-year-old plus-size model from Hoboken, N.J., failed to impress Cowell with her somewhat shrill rendition of "I Say a Little Prayer."

"It was a horrible song choice, and it wasn't a great performance," the acerbic judge said.

"I know I sing better than that," responded Borgella.

Cowell was especially harsh toward the 18-year-old Berry: "I would say get a good job, and enjoy singing. Because I don't think you'll make a successful career out of it."

Berry, from Staunton, Va., took the bad news in stride and closed the show with a spirited cover of "Suspicious Minds."

Thursday's show also featured a presentation of the music video for Abdul's new single, "Dance Like There's No Tomorrow." It drew a warm reception from the studio audience — and a smile and kiss on the cheek from Cowell.

GMA closes gap in nationwide TV ratings

GMA Network continues its ratings surge as it has closed the gap in Nationwide TV ratings, the firm said Friday.

In a statement, GMA Network said that based on AGB Nielsen’s NUTAM survey dated February 10 to 16, GMA was at par with ABS-CBN in terms of total day people ratings, with both Networks tied at 7.6%.

In terms of total day household ratings, GMA trailed its rival Network by a slim 0.8%. ABS-CBN posted a total day household rating of 16.6% while GMA had 15.8%.

In terms of people audience share, ABS-CBN’s lead went down from 1.6% for the period of February 3 to 9 to a measly 0.3% for the period covering February 10 to 16. ABS-CBN’s household audience share lead also decreased from 2.5% to 2.1%.

Six out of the top 10 overall programs nationwide were from GMA. The phenomenal primetime program Marimar ranked 1st while Kamandag and Joaquin Bordado ranked 3rd and 4th, respectively. GMA’s Bitoy’s Funniest Videos, Kap’s Amazing Stories, and Kapuso Mo, Jessica Soho also made it to the lineup of top 10 programs.

In Total Urban Luzon, GMA continued to dominate the lineup of top programs. Sixteen out of the top 30 programs are Kapuso-made and the top six posts are occupied by GMA programs. Marimar, Kamandag, and Joaquin Bordado occupied the top three spots, respectively.

In North/Central Luzon, 21 out of the top 30 programs were from GMA. The top eight posts were all occupied by GMA shows. Marimar, Kamadag, and Joaquin Bordado were the top three programs.

GMA’s ratings in South Luzon, Urban Visayas, and Urban Mindanao also showed significant positive increments.

Meanwhile, GMA continues to improve its signal and facilities in key cities particularly in the South. Given the run of GMA’s momentum, leading over the competitor in the nationwide ratings survey is inevitably foreseen.

‘Mutya ng Pilipinas’ Beauty Awes Malaysians

MANILA, Philippines - A funny thing happened to 2007 Mutya ng Pilipinas Anna Marie Morelos when she went to Malaysia last December to compete in the first Miss Tourism Metropolitan pageant.

The 18-year-old nursing student was surprised to be greeted by a crowd taking photos of her as if she was a celebrity.

Apparently, they had mistaken Morelos for Malaysian superstar Pasha Shandra, who was also arriving on the same day.

“At first I didn’t understand [why] they also wanted to have their pictures taken with me. Still, I gamely posed with them,” Morelos told Inquirer Entertainment.

“I only realized they were waiting for another person when they showed me her photograph,” Morelos said. “Kamukha ko nga siya!”

No superstar

She had to explain to the people that she was not Shandra.

A few hours after that amusing airport scene, Morelos arrived at the hotel and was assigned a room with fellow contestants from Kazakhstan and Ukraine.

The pageant calendar spanned three weeks. Since coronation night was on Dec. 31, Morelos had to spend her first Christmas away from her family and where the holiday season is not traditionally celebrated.
But this was not the only sacrifice she had to make.

Before flying to Kuala Lumpur, Morelos crammed her hospital training hours so that she’ll be ready if she needs to extend her stay overseas.

All these paid off when the 5’7” Filipina beauty landed in the Top 5, ending the Philippine’s 2007 pageant season with a bang. Her victory likewise redeemed the country from dismal results in the previous four major international pageants.

“When my name was called in the Top 10, I told myself, ‘okey na to’,” Morelos recalled. “During intermission, I texted Mama and told her I made it to the semifinals.”

Winning answer

She also related to Inquirer Entertainment that she was not too excited when her name was called. “I was happy, but it felt different knowing that your family is not there to see you being called on stage,” she explained.

In the interview segment, a judge asked Morelos where she would prefer to go on a holiday trip. Replying that she’d like to explore fascinating sights in Southeast Asia, Morelos expounded that the experience would in turn help her promote the Philippines as one of the world’s most exciting tourist destinations.

The answer helped her clinch the fourth runner-up slot, which she didn’t expect.

Sorina Neacsu of Romania won the title.

“I had no idea who would win,” Morelos confessed. “I thought every girl had an edge and a distinct beauty. So I thought, ‘mapapansin pa kaya ako?’.” She also did not receive any “subsidiary awards” in the preliminaries.
However, she noted how appreciative the Malaysians were of her own qualities. “They really admire Filipinos. They think we’re smart and intelligent. It made me proud … And the Filipino bellmen in the hotel kept shouting, ‘Go Philippines!’ whenever they saw me. So that boosted my confidence and self-esteem,” Morelos said.

The whole experience has also given her the impetus to consider joining other competitions in the future.
But that would have to wait. She wants to finish her studies as an incoming senior nursing major at Our Lady of Fatima University in Valenzuela City.

What a gorgeous nurse she’d make.

Lindsay Lohan recreates Marilyn Monroe shoot

NEW YORK - Lindsay Lohan is following in the footsteps of the most famous blond bombshell of them all — Marilyn Monroe.

In the issue of New York magazine on sale Monday, the 21-year-old star of “Mean Girls” and “Freaky Friday” poses nude for photographer Bert Stern in a recreation of one of Monroe’s most famous photo shoots, done shortly before she died.

Stern photographed Monroe in 1962 at the Hotel Bel-Air in California, six weeks before she was found dead from an overdose of barbiturates. Those images for Vogue magazine feature Monroe in next to nothing, posing nude with some scarves and jewelry as her accessories and sipping champagne.

Stern recreated those images with Lohan this month, at the same hotel, with Lohan wearing a blond wig and not much else.

In the essay accompanying the photos, Lohan, who admitted to a serious interest in Monroe, said deciding to do the photo shoot was easy.

“I didn’t have to put much thought into it. I mean, Bert Stern? Doing a Marilyn shoot? When is that ever going to come up? It’s really an honor,” she told the magazine.

Lohan described Monroe’s suicide as “tragic” and said it, along with the Jan. 22 death of actor Heath Ledger from an accidental overdose of prescription drugs, “are both prime examples of what this industry can do to someone.”

The actress, who has been in and out of rehab after two arrests last year on drunken driving and cocaine charges, said she didn’t know why the industry wreaked such havoc on some stars, adding, “I sure as hell wouldn’t let it happen to me.”

Stern told The Associated Press that he found women like Lohan and her tabloid companions Paris Hilton and Britney Spears “interesting.”

“They’re girls that draw attention to their notoriety and their celebrity through their behavior,” he said Monday.

He noted that Monroe and Lohan had similar problems with alcohol but added that — in contrast to the sessions with Monroe — there was no alcohol on the set when he photographed Lohan.

He said he thought the photo shoot would be good for the young actress, giving her the chance to portray herself as a grown-up. He also lauded her for her willingness to do it in the nude.

“I thought she was a natural, not at all squeamish,” he said.

oming off an acclaimed performance in the award-winning drama "Babel," Brad Pitt now plays the charismatic and legendary outlaw Jesse James in Warner Bros.’ thriller, "The Assassination of Jesse James By the Coward Robert Ford."

The film is written and directed by Andrew Dominik, based on the novel by Ron Hansen.

In the movie, as the unpredictable outlaw plans his next great robbery, Jesse wages war on his enemies, who are trying to collect the reward money--and the glory--that is riding on his capture. However, the greatest threat to Jesse’s life may ultimately come from those he trusts the most.

Seeing Brad Pitt in character for the first time, author Ron Hansen recalls it was like having the subject of his years-long research come powerfully to life. "When I saw him on the set I didn’t think ‘There’s Brad Pitt’; I automatically thought, ‘There’s Jesse James.’"

Andrew Dominik agrees. "I believe audiences will forget pretty quickly that he’s Brad Pitt, which is a real testament to his performance. Brad couldn’t have been more passionate about this movie and this role; he’s not afraid to crack some eggs to make an omelet. He captures all the nuances and brings such authority to the part that you understand why people claimed Jesse James’ mere presence could fill a room with warmth or tension.

"By all accounts, Jesse was a very isolated person," the director notes. "I’m not sure how much he really noticed the people around him. He’s been called a sociopath, but that, by definition, is a person who lacks conscience and isn’t very emotional, and I don’t think that’s entirely the case with Jesse, who ran the gamut from violent outbursts to stretches of pensive meditation. In any case, he was certainly damaged."

Pitt, who, coincidentally, grew up in Springfield, Missouri, less than 200 miles from Jesse James’ birthplace and childhood home in Kearney, Missouri, based his characterization on a blend of instinct and Hansen’s research. Carpenters fans try to save former home

DOWNEY, California - Owners of The Carpenters' former home aren't feeling on top of the world about the legions of fans who keep stopping by to pay tribute.

The five-bedroom tract house, where siblings Karen and Richard Carpenter lived and penned some of their greatest hits, was featured on the cover of their 1973 hit album "Now & Then." It was also where an anorexic Karen Carpenter collapsed in 1983 before dying.

Owners Manuel and Blanca Melendez Parra have apparently grown weary of the parade of fans paying homage.

The couple have submitted plans to officials in Downey, a city about 15 miles south of downtown Los Angeles, to raze the 39-year-old main house, the Los Angeles Times reported Saturday. The Parras have already torn down an adjoining house and have begun construction on a larger home.

The proposal to level the rest of the residence has angered fans.

"This house is our version of Graceland," said Carpenters aficionado Jon Konjoyan. "When they photographed the 'Now & Then' cover here in 1973, the house was instantly immortalized."

The 57-year-old musician and promoter is heading a campaign to save the original home from the wrecker's ball. Some fans have proposed that Downey officials declare the house a historic landmark.

The entire Carpenter family lived in the main house. The adjoining section was used as an office, rehearsal studio and recreation room.

The Carpenters' parents lived in the residence until Harold Carpenter's death in 1988 and Agnes Carpenter's in 1996. Richard Carpenter sold the house a year later.

After the Parras bought the house, Jessica Parra, said that at first her parents invited fans into the home and gave away items left by Richard Carpenter.

"In the beginning, we let everybody in. But honestly, it became horrible, not only for us but for the neighborhood," Parra said. "People peek in windows and take pictures. They leave flowers on the front porch."

Downey officials said that they received plans for a new residence, but that no demolition permit has been issued.

Konjoyan is holding out hope. He wants the home to be bought and rehabilitated. If that is not possible, he wants the structure to be moved.

"They were such a huge American act in the '70s," Konjoyan said of the duo. "So many people loved them." - AP

On Tuesday, the Queen of Soul let everyone know her royal feathers were ruffled when Beyonce called Turner "The Queen" before their joint performance Sunday at the Grammys. Franklin, who also performed at the ceremony, was sitting in the audience: Beyonce did reference her along with other top female singers before introducing Turner.

"I am not sure of whose toes I may have stepped on or whose ego I may have bruised between the Grammy writers and Beyonce," Franklin said in a statement issued by her publicist. "However, I dismissed it as a cheap shot for controversy."

However, in an interview with CelebTV.com posted Wednesday, Matthew Knowles, Beyonce's father and manager, said: "I am not taking something this ridiculous to Beyonce. Beyonce referred to Tina Turner as a 'queen.' Not queen of gospel, queen of soul, queen of blues, Queen of England. I consider my wife a queen and sometimes call her that. Does Aretha have a problem with that?"

Beyonce's representative did not respond to a request from The Associated Press seeking comment.

Soul singer Natalie Cole spoke out against Amy Winehouse's haul of Grammy awards on Monday, saying the British star's multiple wins sent a "bad message," a report said.

Cole, a multiple Grammy winner who helped announced Winehouse's record of the year victory at Sunday's ceremony in Los Angeles, criticized the award in an interview on People magazine's website.

"I don't think she should have won," Cole said of Winehouse, who is currently receiving treatment at a rehabilitation clinic for drug abuse.

"I think it sends a bad message to our young people who are trying to get into this business, the ones who are trying to do it right and really trying to keep themselves together," added Cole, 58.

"We have to stop rewarding bad behavior."

Cole, the daughter of legendary crooner Nat King Cole, chronicled her own battle against drug addiction in a 2000 memoir "Angel on My Shoulder."

However the singer was adamant that Winehouse should not have been honored with the music industry's top awards.

"I'm sorry. I think the girl is talented, gifted, but it's not right for her to be able to have her cake and eat it too."

"She needs to get herself together ... this is about discipline and hard work, and you don't get to just do your drugs and go onstage and get rewarded."

Cole had no complaints with Winehouse's Grammys performance, which was beamed to Los Angeles via satellite from London.

"Her performance was fine," Cole said.

"I don't take anything away from her talent, but I just feel like she's stepping into a place that she hasn't earned yet."

Winehouse was the star of Sunday's show, scooping five awards -- including the coveted record of the year, song of the year and best new artist.

Cole however said she would have preferred to see R'n'B stars Beyonce or Rihanna rewarded instead of Winehouse.

"I just feel like they're ready to go the long haul. You can tell how hard they work, they're great people, their heart is in the right place."

Filth and Wisdom Directed by MADONNA

Having been panned for most of her efforts in front of the camera, pop icon Madonna makes her debut in the director's chair Wednesday at the Berlin Film Festival.

Critics have already begun sharpening their pencils at the prospect of "Filth and Wisdom" which revolves around a Ukrainian immigrant who finances his dreams of rock stardom by moonlighting as a cross-dressing dominatrix, and his two female flatmates.

Madonna, who will add some welcome star power to what has been a rather lackluster Berlinale, has been less than timid about her ambitions as a filmmaker.

"I have always been inspired by the films of Godard, Visconti, Pasolini and Fellini and hope that I may one day make something that comes close to their genius," she said in a her director's statement for Wednesday's premiere.

Billed as a London-based comedy, "Filth and Wisdom" stars Eugene Hutz, the Ukrainian frontman for Gypsy punk rock band Gogol Bordello, as well as British cult star Richard E. Grant.
Madonna's own acting career got off to a promising start with a starring role in 1985's "Desperately Seeking Susan," but then went into terminal decline with her appearances in major flops like 1986's "Shanghai Surprise" alongside first husband Sean Penn.

Her last celluloid outing was in the widely derided "Swept Away" in 2002, which was directed by her current husband Guy Ritchie and involved, according to the New York Times, "a lot of swearing, a little nudity, a modicum of sex and an eternity of staring at your watch".

In "Filth and Wisdom," Hutz plays "AK" a self-proclaimed philosopher and poet, whose sideline career sees him assume characters ranging from a Marine drill instructor to former British prime minister Margaret Thatcher -- depending on the tastes of his clients.

Grant plays a blind professor and frustrated writer who lives in the same building.

"I have always admired the art of filmmaking and the ability to tell a good story," Madonna said in her program notes. "After almost three decades of being in front of a camera, I decided to put my money where my mouth is."

The Material Girl not only directs, but also co-wrote the screenplay and acted as executive producer.

"'Filth and Wisdom was essentially my way of putting myself through film school," she said.

The project began life as a short, but Madonna said it grew into a feature as she became more involved in the lives of the three main characters.

"When the film was finished, I realized that they were all aspects of me, so the whole experience was both artistic and therapeutic," she said.

Madonna's participation in the Berlinale is in keeping with the distinctly musical flavor of this year's festival, which opened last Thursday with the world premiere of Martin Scorsese's concert movie with The Rolling Stones, "Shine a Light".

The godmother of punk, Patti Smith, attended the screening of a documentary on her career, while rock veteran Neil Young presented a film about Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young's 2006 Freedom of Speech Tour.

Bakit nga ba ayaw matsugi-tsugi ng balita na nagsisisi si Angel Locsin sa pag-alis niya sa GMA 7?
Ang ibig sabihin, hindi bukal sa puso ni Angel ang sinasabi nito na happy siya sa kanyang bagong bahay, ang ABS-CBN?

Hindi ko na inaalam ang nightly ratings ng Lobo dahil tiyak na wala itong pagbabago.
Pero kung aabot sa 30% ang ratings ng Lobo, ako ang unang-unang magsusulat dahil kahit papaano, nakaabante ang show nina Angel at Piolo Pascual.

Nabasa at nabalitaan ko na hindi na naman bati si Angel at ang kanyang manager na si Becky Aguila pero wala silang reaksyon.

Maniniwala ako na magkaaway sila kung sina Angel at Becky ang mismong magkukuwento o magsasabi ng “Oo, hate namin ngayon ang isa’t isa!”

GMA’s Joaquin Bordado, starring Robin Padilla and Iza Calzado, garnered a respectable 36.6 percent on its premiere episode Monday night, February 11, 2008, following Marimar and Kamandag. It occupied Zaido’s timeslot which ended last Friday with a similar ranking of no. 3 in the primetime block.

Placing 6th last Monday was Lobo with a rating of 23.3% The Piolo Pascual-Angel Locsin starrer was also at no. 6 position last Friday nudging Kung Fu Kids down to no. 7 in the primetime race. If this trend continues, Lobo will be ABS-CBN’s over-all no. 1 program this season instead of Kung Fu Kids.

Some tv specials and primers from GMA, which is a non-series, made it to the Top 10 in their respective blocks. The GMA Flash Report: ZTE Scandal was able to place 3rd in the daytime race last Friday, February 8, 2008. Yesterday, the same Flash Report was able to place 6th among the usual tv series.

The Joaquin Bordado primer last Friday, pre-empting Coffee Prince, placed 5th overall with 27 percent. On Saturday’s daytime race, My Bestfriend’s Girlfriend: The Making placed 7th in the Top 9.

KC Concepcion on Maalaala Mo Kaya (MMK)

KC Concepcion kicks off her acting career via her very first television drama project, ABS-CBN’s “Maalaala Mo Kaya”.

KC will play the role of Darlene, a young lady who lives a comfortable life until a tragedy leaves her family without a father. From a rich and sheltered party-girl, Darlene becomes her family’s breadwinner. KC will be joined by Ricky Davao, Derek Ramsay and Agot Isidro. The episode is directed by Jerry Sineneng and will be aired this coming Friday, February 15.
